Hot Girl Summer…. Without the Food Rules
It’s the start of the hot girl summer season (disclaimer: we’re rewriting what this means…so keep reading)!
Summer often comes with a flood of “do’s” and “don’ts” around food and body image. Cleanse this, avoid that, shrink yourself to fit an impossible ideal.
But what if this year, you tried something different? What if summer was about feeling good - not punishing your body or trying to change it? Here’s how to embrace a summer full of freedom and nourishment, no rules required.
Rewrite your hot girl summer
Let’s redefine what it means to feel good in our bodies this summer.
It’s not about thigh gaps, washboard abs, or squeezing into the tiniest bikini. Maybe hot girl summer is really about freedom. Laughing with your friends. Enjoying the beach sandwich without guilt. Swimming in the ocean without second thoughts.
It is about appreciating everything your body does for you and choosing habits that help you feel good in it. Feeling present, not perfect.
Summer mindset shifts
Ditch the “all or nothing” mindset: Many of us slip into a cycle of restriction followed by overindulgence - “I’ll be perfect this week, then I’ll binge on the weekend.” This “all or nothing” mindset only creates stress and guilt around food. This summer, try embracing balance instead. There’s room for juicy watermelon, cold lemonade, and yes, even a slice of cake. When you let go of rigid rules, you give yourself permission to fully enjoy the moment, and that’s real nourishment.
Focus on how food makes you feel physically: Forget obsessing over calories or labels. Instead, ask yourself: Does this food make me feel energized? Joyful? Satisfied? When you eat for pleasure and fuel, your body responds. Summer treats can be a source of happiness, not anxiety. Mindful eating is about honoring your hunger, cravings, and fullness - not following external rules. Also - the more you focus on feeling good, the more you naturally gravitate towards healthy behaviors :)
Celebrate movement that feels fun and freeing: Exercise shouldn’t feel like punishment or a way to “earn” food. Summer invites us to find movement that lights us up. Swim in the ocean, take sunset walks, dance barefoot in the grass. Moving with joy nourishes your body and spirit, making it easier to listen to what your body needs throughout the season.
